Pre-Ride Checklist: 5 Essential ATV and Side by Sides Inspections Before Hitting the Quinte Trails
Published on: Aug 5, 2026

Maintenance & Technical Advice
There is nothing quite like loading up your Polaris Sportsman, Ranger, RZR or Xpedition and heading out to explore the rugged trail networks around Hastings and Prince Edward County or wherever you're headed. However, a great day on the trails can quickly cut short if your machine experiences a preventable breakdown. To keep your rides safe and smooth, run through this quick five-minute pre-ride inspection checklist every single time you head out.
- 1. Check the Fluid Levels
Never assume your fluids are fine. Check your engine oil, coolant levels, and brake fluid. Low oil can permanently damage your engine under heavy trail loads, while low coolant can cause overheating when crawling through slow, muddy sections. - 2. Inspect Tire Pressure and Rims
Tires run on low pressure, which means even a small leak can cause a bead to separate from the rim on a sharp turn. Check your PSI with a low-pressure gauge. Look closely for anything embedded, sharp rocks, or sidewall cracks from your last ride. - 3. Test the Brakes and Throttle
With the engine off, press the throttle lever to ensure it moves smoothly and snaps back instantly when released. A sticking throttle is incredibly dangerous. Next, squeeze the brake levers and press the foot pedal to ensure they feel firm, not spongy. - 4. Look at the Air Box
Trail riding gets dusty, and if you enjoy mud bogging, dirty water can easily find its way into your air intake. Pop open the air box to ensure the filter is clean and free of debris, leaves, or trapped water. A clogged filter starves your engine of power. - 5. Scan the Suspension and Boots
Squat down and look behind the wheels. Check the rubber CV boots on your axles for any rips or tears. A torn boot lets mud and sand ruin your expensive CV joints very quickly. Also, look for leaking shock absorbers or loose suspension bolts.
